Hair Loss

Hair loss, whether partial or complete, can affect not only your appearance but also your self-esteem. It’s a common condition that can strike at any age and impact both men and women. Hair loss can be a gradual or sudden occurrence, with its roots in various factors.

What Causes Hair Loss?

The causes are diverse, affecting individuals across different age groups and genders. This condition may arise from genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, underlying medical conditions, or simply be a natural consequence of aging.

  • Androgenetic Alopecia (Genetic Hair Loss): Known as male or female pattern baldness, is the most prevalent cause of hair loss and often runs in families. It’s a result of genetic and hormonal factors leading to progressive hair thinning and loss.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal imbalances can contribute to hair thinning or loss. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and pregnancy can bring about shifts in hormone levels that impact hair growth.
  • Physical Stress: Surgery, traumatic injury, or rapid weight loss can push hair follicles into the resting phase, triggering hair loss.
  • Emotional Stress: Emotional stress can lead to conditions like telogen effluvium and exacerbate genetic hair thinning and loss.
  • Poor Scalp Health: Conditions like dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and scalp psoriasis can contribute to hair loss if left untreated.

There are also medical conditions which can lead to hair thinning and permanent loss:

  • Alopecia areata: An autoimmune condition that can result in patchy to complete hair loss with family history frequency of 42%.
  • Telogen effluvium: Hair follicles entering the resting phase prematurely due to physical or emotional stress, illness, or surgery. This can last for longer than 6 months and tends to affect middle aged women more heavily
  • Fungal Infections: Fungal infections of the scalp, such as tinea capitis (ringworm of the scalp), can cause hair thinning and loss. These infections are typically characterized by red, scaly patches on the scalp and hair breakage or loss in affected areas.
  • Bacterial Infections: Bacterial infections, such as folliculitis, can also lead to hair thinning and loss. Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacteria entering the skin through cuts, abrasions, or other skin conditions.
  • Trichotillomania: A psychological disorder characterized by compulsive hair-pulling.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: Inadequate intake of essential nutrients like iron, zinc, and biotin can impact hair health.
  • Medications: Some medications, including certain chemotherapy drugs, anticoagulants, beta-blockers, and retinoids, can lead to hair loss as a side effect

How To Tackle Hair Loss?

When it comes to hair loss, various treatments are available to help you regain your hair and confidence:

  • Prescription Medications: Men can benefit from finasteride (Propecia), which can slow hair loss and stimulate regrowth. It works by inhibiting dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone associated with male pattern baldness. Women with androgenetic alopecia may be prescribed medications such as spironolactone.
  • Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): LLLT devices, including laser combs and helmets, utilize low-level laser light to stimulate hair follicles and encourage growth. These devices can be used at home and may be recommended by healthcare providers.
